For Professionals

Clearer communication when someone is living with lymphoedema.

LymphAware ID is an additional communication aid that helps people living with lymphoedema share information they have chosen to make available.

What LymphAware ID is

LymphAware ID combines a physical identification card with a QR-linked digital profile.

The profile contains information the patient has chosen to make available and is designed to be easy to understand on a mobile phone.

The purpose is to support communication, particularly where the person may find it difficult, uncomfortable or impractical to explain everything themselves.

What LymphAware ID is not

LymphAware ID is not a clinical record, diagnostic tool or substitute for professional assessment.

Information shown through LymphAware ID should be considered alongside normal professional judgement and appropriate clinical information.

Who may find LymphAware ID useful?

The system can be useful in a range of situations where clear, patient-selected information may support understanding.

Healthcare professionals

A LymphAware ID profile may help surface relevant patient-selected information alongside normal assessment and clinical records.

Emergency services

The card may provide an additional route to information when a person finds it difficult to explain their condition or needs.

Businesses and support services

LymphAware ID may help improve understanding where a person needs assistance, consideration or additional time.

Patient-selected information

The patient remains in control of what they choose to make available through their LymphAware ID profile.

The system uses data minimisation and maintains a clear distinction between account information and information displayed through the QR-linked profile.

Using the information appropriately

A valid LymphAware ID profile is intended to support communication, not replace professional judgement.

Information may help provide context about the person's lymphoedema, practical assistance needs or other relevant considerations they have chosen to share.

Where healthcare decisions are required, appropriate professional assessment and clinical information remain essential.

Clinical guidance

Cellulitis in lymphoedema

Cellulitis is an important complication of lymphoedema and its presentation and management may differ from cellulitis in other clinical situations. Prompt assessment and treatment are important.

LymphAware ID does not provide prescribing guidance and does not reproduce antibiotic or dosing instructions. Clinical decisions should be based on current professional guidance and the individual patient's circumstances.

Current BLS / LSN guidance

The British Lymphology Society and Lymphoedema Support Network publish professional guidance on the management of cellulitis in lymphoedema. The current document is dated August 2025.

The guidance states that prescribing decisions should be made in the context of the complete document.

LymphAware ID remains patient-led. The current invitation-only trial is helping test the service in real use, and professional engagement is welcomed as part of its continued review and improvement.
